There are more than 300 bridges in St. Petersburg, 9 of them are constantly drawn during navigation period from April to November. According to legend Peter the Great wanted Russian people to be the nation of the sailors. So he planned the city so that they could use only water transportation. Therefore construction of the bridges was forbidden. However, his idea did not come true and two decades later first bridges appeared. During the trip you will see the most beautiful bridges of St. Petersburg. Today, they are opened not for "beauty" but and in order to open the way for ships carrying metals, timber, oil and other valuable cargo. However it is really impressive sight.

The main water artery of the city is the Neva. Its length within St. Petersburg is 32 km. At the mouth the Neva splits into many brunches. The Small Neva, Large, Medium are the most significant. Since the first years of the city the construction of the canals started. The number of rivers, canals occupies the first place in the country (80 rivers, streams and channels). Their total length is 3 times more than the length of the Neva. There are 100 bodies of water: lakes, ponds, reservoirs. Neva geologically is young river. It is little over 4 thousand years. It flows from Ladoga lake and empties into the Finland Gulf. It's length is 74 kilometers, it's average width is 600 meters, depth is 24 meters.
