 Holy gates

In1881 Ignaty Grinevitsky killed Emperor Alexander 2. After the sovereign's martyr's death his sun inherited the throne. The city funds were destined to build in honor of this sad event chapel or a Church. However, in April at the expense of merchants Gromov and Militsin a wooden chapel appeared. Memorial services were conducted there. Meanwhile, newspapers announced a competition. The memorial temple planned to be built. The project by academician Parland and Archimandrite of the Trinity-Sergiev desert Ignatius was approved. The Resurrection of Christ temple was called by inhabitants the Saviour-on-Blood.

The Cathedral was built from 1883 to1901. The architecture concrete foundation has been applied in constructing. An ingenious basements, waterproofing system, central heating, electric lighting using 1689 lamps, lightning protection and other structures allowed to consider it modern building indeed. From distance, the Cathedral attracts attention with its breathtaking decor - a variety of trims, which include mosaic inserts and icons, corbels, ceramic and colorful tiles gilded and enameled. Inside the temple the walls, pillars, vaults are covered with mosaics.

Personal Saint-Petersburg private guide will tell you that the galaxy of artists - Ryabushkin and Koshelev, Vasnetsov and Kharlamov, Nesterov, Parland himself and others worked on the sketches of icons for iconostasis, dome ceilings, wall bases of icon cases. The place where the tsar mortally wounded fall down is specially emphasis in the decoration. It was carefully maintained, then splendid canopy, decorated with stars of Siberian semiprecious stones and topazes was withdrawn over it.

The fancy semi-circular fence near the Saviour and the garden was performed by Parland. The consecration was on the Transfiguration day. On the ceremony the tsar was present, his August wife, the clergy and the court. Remarkably, out of 5000000 rubles spent for this testimony of the heartfelt love to the liberator of peasants, 580000 were donated by the townspeople. The government provided the maintenance of this sanctuary.
